Brief Biography of Bhaddanta Say Keinda

(Dhammaduta Ashin Chekinda)

The future Dhammaduta Ashin Say Keinda was born on Tuesday, the ninth waxing day of Tabodwe in the Myanmar year 1319 (28 January 1958) of parents U Aung Than and Daw Sein Kyi in Thawdarpan Ward, Sagaing city in Sagaing Division, Myanmar.

He matriculated from the State High School No.1, Sagaing, in 1975, and obtained the Diploma of A.G.T.I. (Civil) [Associate of the Government Technical Institute] from the Government Technical Institute, Mandalay, in 1979. Ashin Say Keinda was awarded the M.A. (B.Dh.) by the International Theravãda Buddhist Missionary University in 2004.

In 1983 he supplicated and was ordained as a monk in Bilin Township, Mon State, under the guidance of Taungsoon Dhammaduta Sayadaw as his preceptor.

Ashin Say Keinda studied the Pãli texts (Pariyatti) at the Taungsoon Dhammaduta monastery and passed the primary, Padhamange, Padhamalat and Padhamagyi exams, each with a single sitting.

In 1993 he passed Dhammācariya exams (the three pitakas) within a single year and was conferred the title of lecturer of Buddhist striptures (Sāsanadhaja dhammācariya) by the Government.  He was also conferred the Saddhammanepuññadhammācariya and the Sāsanajotitipāladhammācariya titles.

The government also awarded him the titles of Dhammakathika bahujanahitadhara in the year 2003, and Mahãsaddhammajotikadaja in 2005.

Ashin Say Keinda studied the pariyatti under the venerable sayadaws at various monasteries throughout Myanmar such as the Dhammaduta monastery in Taungsoon, Mahagandayon monastery in Amarapura, Masoyein monastery in Mandalay, Zayyathein Pali University in Sagaing, and the Thubawdayon monastery in Sagaing.

He is a patron of the governing councils of Dhammaduta, the Sasana Council of Hmawby Township and the head of the Dhammaduta Zaytawun Tawya Saykeindar monastery in Hmawby.  In addition to his duties as an associate professor in the Faculty of Patipatti, International Theravãda Buddhist Missionary University, Ashin Say Keinda also takes the responsibility of a warden at the dormitory for international students at the University.  Sayadaw’s other activities include sharing Buddha’s teachings, giving Dhamma talks, writing books on Buddhism, conducting meditation courses, and holding cultural and religious sessions for school children during long holidays.
